During the last meeting with the parents, teachers, and executives of the school, one of the most prominent complaints being made by parents was the provision of a mobile application to make a way to easily order meals for their kids. This would aid them in not just ensuring a healthy life but also monitoring what they eat, as well as freeing up time in their already busy schedule. I was tasked with the design of a mobile platform for the school to aid parents in ordering meals for their kids.

What is Iparent?

Iparent is a meal-ordering app developed for parents to easily order meals for their kids. It aims to handle the problem of being able to order your meal at once, notwithstanding the number of kids they would be ordering for while also ensuring they eat healthily.

It solved this by the parent being prompted to register their kids’ details on the application while signing up and subsequently ordering for their kids by just picking the kid they are currently ordering for.

Parents explore our menu page and save dishes to favorites so that on order they get to pick from favorites.

CHALLENGE

The work of parents is increasing daily, coupled with a rise in inflation and the increasing need for parents to raise funds so they can earn the money to pay bills and sustain their families. They have little or no time to take care of packaging lunch packs for their children. I was tasked with designing a solution for these working parents to ensure their kids can still afford to eat healthy meals and free up time for them to perform other functions.

PROCESS

The approach that guided me throughout this project was the double diamond method. I needed to discover and define real problems so that I could weed out any assumptions and design solutions for actual frustrations.

DISCOVER

Because what we had most currently in the market was mostly partnerships between restaurants, in which users randomly ordered food from a list of restaurants and it was delivered to them, with no understanding of the health implications of the food, I had to get creative with my research on how I could include a feature that would handle that while also meeting the primary needs of the parents.

Competitive Analysis: For the competitive analysis portion of my research, I decided to look at how other schools who had similar platforms went around the design of their solution.

User Interviews: In order to empathize with the users and to gain some insights into the problems of parents, why they needed the application, and also their experience with some of the meal booking apps, all to improve their experience when using the mobile application. I decided to interview 5 individuals. Using my interview script as a guide, I spoke with each person, and taking notes along the way. Afterward, I transferred these notes to post-it notes.

DEFINE

During the synthesis phase, I created an affinity map, with my interview post-it notes. This way, I was able to group them together with similar themes and patterns, in order to gain insight into the users’ overall experience. Combining those with my competitive analysis findings, I was able to derive the following insights.
